I was born September 1984 in South-Eastern Victoria, Australia. Growing with family in a small community, close to the beach and taking vacation/holidays constantly, I explored Australia in my early years. I attended primary school in the local area, learning a passion for the environment, creating with my hands, and most of all finding love for guitar and a world of music. I pursued my music in various small bands during primary school before heading off to high school. In the first year however, I injured myself, and had to start a slow journey through 3 years of healing. Towards the end of this period I rediscovered my guitar and had my first taste of photography class. The dark room drew me in - the darkness, and a whole new way to perceive life around me. For 3 years until the end of high school, lunch breaks and after school were spent in the darkroom. I mostly kept to myself there because I could be free to create without distractions.
In the last year of school I met a friend, and soon to be lifetime brother, Xavier Rudd. A musician who was drawn to my photographs as I was drawn to his music and instruments. Working part time for him as a guitar technician, I finished school and attended university. Studying an engineering degree of computer telecommunications, I lasted 7 weeks before jumping on board to tour the world with Xavier. Over the last three years I have covered all aspects of touring from stage, guitars, instruments, to accounting, merchandise and tour managing, and a degree in life experiences. I feel so incredibly lucky to have been able to tour some of the most amazing places, from New York City, to Montreal, to surfing beaches of France and to the Rocky Mountains. In doing so, I have met musicians and artists that all share an amazing common creative ground. I have continued to explore photography through many mediums. This is only the beginning of my journey, and the beginning of my photographic exploration. I appreciate everyone who has ever helped me or looked twice at a photo of mine, more than I can ever express. Thank You. Gear Talk... As far as gear and equipment goes, I borrowed a Nikon manual-auto from a friend, and used it for most of high school and thereafter. A year or so into touring with Xavier, I switched to a fully manual Nikon silver body SLR. This is perfect for me. As basic as can be, but complimented beautifully by a 50mm and 135mm lens, it has everything I need. I have been shooting black and white ever since. For me, it's all about the focus, and the subject, rather than how much equipment I have. Plus I like to have full control of a camera, with no flashy lights to tell me what to do. I use a range of different films from Kodak to Illford, and 25 to 3200asa, but am constantly experimenting with different films. My favorite film is 3200, purely for the grain and "oldness" I can achieve from it, and I just love the way light falls upon it. |
